Meet Our Resident Bug & Garden Enthusiast

With over 60 years of hands-on experience in gardening and entomology, Sharon is an award-winning educator at WSU who has inspired everyone from curious kids to those in the Master Gardeners Program. Her passion has taken root through countless workshops, television and radio appearances, news articles, photography, and publications - join our newsletter for access to these!

Any garden is her laboratory—a space for experimentation, joy, and discovery. She brings expertise in water quality, pest management, pollinators, beneficial insects, and diagnosing plant problems. And yes, she watches bugs for fun.

Whether she’s leading a “bug tour” of your backyard, writing about insect antics, or laughing with kids one-on-one, her approach is always rooted in making learning enjoyable and fighting for non-discrimination against bugs (spiders at the forefront). With a touch of quirky humor and a knack for connecting people and ideas, Sharon helps you see your landscape through a lens of curiosity and delight.

Learning. Laughing. Looking closely.

Welcome to the garden classroom community.

&Odessa

Meet our design solutions

Odessa is an operations manager by day and a garden design enthusiast by night, blending strategic thinking with creative vision to solve problems and add efficiencies. She has a knack for designing both systems and outdoor spaces that are functional, low-maintenance, and undeniably beautiful.

Her passion stems from solving problems — whether it’s streamlining workflows or reimagining a yard to better suit the needs of its people (and pollinators). With an eye for aesthetics and a head for logistics, Odessa brings practical magic to every project she touches.

Whether she’s managing projects or mapping out a native plant bed into a garden layout, she’s always thinking about how to make life simpler, greener, and more delightful.
